A once in a lifetime concert with the rarest voice type in the world.
Samuel Mariño live at Koerner Hall.
Considered the world’s rarest voice type, the male soprano sound defies categorization. Those who witnessed the Tafelmusik debut of Samuel Mariño in 2023 will never forget the sheer thrill of his artistry, his “lyric instincts…and sincere emotional investment in the musical material” (Ludwig van Toronto). We are delighted to welcome Samuel back to join the orchestra for an operatic tour de force at Koerner Hall.
Toronto audiences can look forward to exhilarating live performances of music Mariño selected for his acclaimed album, Sopranista, including two arias from L’Amant anonyme by Joseph Bologne. Tafelmusik’s 2003 recording of instrumental music from this opera was among the first to bring the brilliance of this influential Black 18th-century composer to a wider audience.
Mariño’s offerings include an exquisite aria from Mozart’s Mitridate and Gluck’s most famous aria, “Che faro’ senza Euridice” from Orfeo ed Euridice. Hand-picked virtuoso arias from operas by Haydn and Salieri framed by orchestral music directed by Tafelmusik’s “inspirational” Julia Wedman (Gramophone) complete the picture.
Bound to delight opera lovers and the opera-curious alike, this program of arias by classical composers is the perfect showcase for Mariño’s otherworldly soprano voice.
