You’re Cordially Invited to “GayGrandpa’s 70th Birthday!” – An Exquisite Pride Cabaret from The Poetry Brothel Toronto!

When it comes to queer storytelling and performance, intertwined with the rich history of Toronto – and Canada’s – queer community, there isn’t a more compelling and storied personification of Queer than Dennis Duncan’s GayGrandpa. Out since 1969, lifelong actor, ballerino, and visual artist: Dennis lived through the parties, AIDS epidemic, a cross Canada migration, and has lived proudly. Dennis’ story is one of love, loss, and community- and he is ready to share it for the first time as part of Toronto’s 2025 Pride programming.

As Pride Toronto unfurls its vibrant tapestry of gaiety: join the Poetry Brothel Toronto for an evening promising heartwarming humour and merrymaking. Celebrate Pride at “GayGrandpa’s 70th Birthday!” – a joyous one-[Gay]-man show, produced by the Poetry Brothel Toronto.

On Friday, June 20th, The Poetry Brothel Toronto, renowned for its unique immersive fusion of literary artistry and cabaret, proudly presents “GayGrandpa’s 70th Birthday!” at the Super Wonder Gallery. This special event promises a contribution to Pride Month that is powerful and deeply personal. Move beyond the bustling downtown core for an intimate, unforgettable, experience on the city’s west side.

Connect with a living legend of Toronto’s queer scene, celebrating the wisdom of an elder within the 2SLGBTQI+ community. GayGrandpa is written and performed by Dennis Duncan, our beloved “Gay Grandpa,” celebrating a life rich in experiences as an out and proud gay man: tales of love, resilience, and the enduring power of self-acceptance. His narrative will inspire laughter and tears and your own journey toward unapologetically embodying the person you are truly proud to be.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in their “rainbow sparkly best,” adding to the celebratory and festive atmosphere. GayGrandpa will be an essential part of Pride Toronto’s diverse programming: a unique opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire future generations of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Kicking off with a spirited cocktail hour at 8pm, accompanied by original music by Brendee Green (PBTo) and Asher Ettinger, GayGrandpa will take the stage at 9pm to captivate and inspire with the main show. The evening will conclude before midnight – so attendees can trade their glass slippers for stripper heels and head back to the gaybourhod in time for the Village’s all-night parties that Toronto Pride is known and adored for.

The Poetry Brothel is celebrated for its immersive literary cabarets and comes to Toronto in association with The Poetry Society of New York. Blending poetry, vaudeville, activism, burlesque, live music, and magic, the Poetry Brothel is an incomparable Cabaret series. Our Toronto chapter, led by Madame Titania (Brendee Green), has cultivated a reputation for creating safe queer spaces that invite performers and attendees to embrace their alter egos and immerse themselves in worlds of words, wonder, and whimsy. This Pride event exemplifies our commitment to storytelling that resonates deeply with the spirit of community.

Don’t miss your chance to revel in the magic and joy of authenticity at GayGrandpa’s Birthday Celebration, 70 years of Fabulous, June 20th at the Super Wonder Gallery!
