ABOUT THIS EVENT

Curated by the brOWN//out collective

brOWN//out has been the “south asian” community stage at Pride Toronto since 2011. It is a mixtape of adventures. Rushing from waters, mountains and plains of homeland(s) through the diaspora and back. Over and over again. brOWN//out is a community space for “south asian” queer and trans artists: singers, poets, dancers, drag and burlesque artists, musicians and more. The brOWN//out collective is supported by a multitude of artists, organizers, agitators, dreamers and do-ers.

*the term “south asian” is used strategically: there is no way to adequately represent all the complexities of having identities connected to “South Asia,” which can include diasporic, Nepali, NRI, Tamil, Indo-Caribbean, Oriya-speaking, brown, Fijian, Maldivian, mixed-race, Pakistani, and more. The inadequateness of the term means that many “south asian” community spaces have perpetuated the harm of exclusion, in particular of Black “south asian” folks, Dalit folks and more. brOWN//out can be, and needs to be: a place for disrupting these exclusions, collectively dreaming and (re)building.
Dr. Dirty Digoonious

Dr. Dirty Digoonious

Dr. Dirty Digoonious (he/him) is a slimy greaseball based in Waterloo and Ottawa, with a masters of swagger, and a PhD in suave and sleaze. This Dr. is everyone’s fav bad boy: the short king you’ve always needed. He puts the D in PhD and will Steal your girl! The Doc has performed on the BrOWN//Out stage as part of Toronto Pride 2024. He recently performed in Mary Poppers' One Big Gay Disco in Kitchener, a dance party honoring the queer history of the disco genre. In March, Dr. D performed in the Femme Folks Fest Drag Show, part of a larger arts festival organized by Pat The Dog Theatre Company in Waterloo. The Doc has a strong dance background, and his performances are very dance heavy with multiple styles ranging from jazz to hip hop. Dr. D is also a singer and frequently incorporates both musical theatre and operatic numbers into his sets. Outside of drag, Nuha Yousuf is an opera and musical theatre singer and recent graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University’s classical voice program. She seeks to break down barriers, redefine traditions and render opera accessible through fusing the world of drag and opera together. She believes classical music is for everyone, and that it is most powerful when shared as a community. Dr. Dirty Digoonious loves to show off his slimy, dirty little personality though his dance, musical theatre and opera skills.
