Sophie Stiquée (aka “DJ ESL”)

Sophie Stiquée is the stage persona and alter ego of Mathieu Young, a non-binary queer artist and performer originally from Mauritius, a small island nation in Africa. Sophie Stiquée is known for their vibrant and multifaceted expressions through drag artistry, performance and visual arts.
Sophie Stiquée's advocacy and artistic leadership have extended beyond borders. Despite the legal challenges and discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in Mauritius, they have actively organized and participated in LGBTQIA+ events in both Canada and their home country. Sophie's initiatives include the groundbreaking project, Homorisiens, funded by the City of Toronto and exhibited in the historic North York Zion Schoolhouse Museum. This project provided a significant platform to celebrate and share the diverse experiences of the queer Mauritian community in Toronto. It not only defied legal and social barriers but also stood as a testament to Sophie's unwavering commitment to fostering understanding, unity, and inclusivity through art.
Sophie Stiquée is the only Creole Asian-African, Francophone, non-binary, multidisciplinary drag artist in Canada.
