This event includes ASL interpretation
Pride Toronto joins in solidarity with people, in Toronto and around the world, protesting anti-Black racism, systemic racism, police brutality, injustice, and inequality. As individuals, and together as an institution, we strongly reject racism and discrimination. We recognize the pain and anger felt by Black communities and the additional marginalization and hurt experienced by those who also identify as queer and/or trans.
Pride Toronto has a history of failing queer and trans-Black and BIPOC community members and of not being transparent enough with our actions and progress. On June 19, 2020, Pride Toronto posted an Anti-Black Racism Statement and today, we are taking further steps to ensure we take action behind our commitments to the Black community.
On Sunday, June 28 Pride Toronto will be moving the Virtual Parade to ensure our communities are able to attend the rally and teach-in at Nathan Phillips Square focusing on the defunding of the Police hosted by No Pride in Policing Coalition. This event is co-sponsored by Black Lives Matter Toronto, Blackness YES!, Showing Up For Racial Justice Toronto, No More Silence, Toronto Overdose Prevention Society, Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, Queer Ontario. Pride Toronto will be supporting this event through funding ASL during the rally.
We understand that this will require logistical readjustments for all Parade participants as well as Pride Toronto’s artists, volunteers, community viewers, operation and production teams. We appreciate your understanding of the importance of why we have made this change. This is a teachable moment for all of us, and the beginning of a larger global change to support the Black and BIPOC communities.
The Virtual Pride Parade has been moved to Sunday, June 28th at 12:00-1:30 PM and can be watched online. We look forward to having you tune in! In solidarity, Pride Toronto
