Pride reviews strategies for 30th Anniversary

Pride Toronto seeks public input on community engagement, political involvement and corporate participation.
As Pride Toronto prepares for its 30th festival in June 2010 and World Pride in 2014, organizers are reflecting on past years and asking the community to comment on building strategies for the future of the annual event.
Pride Toronto is collecting public views on community involvement and engagement, educational and human rights activities, corporate funding and festival participation, including the involvement of activist political organizations in the festival through a series of outreach activities and a public comment section on their website.
Pride Toronto faced significant pressure to prevent activist political groups not focused on LGBT issues, such as Queers Against Israeli Apartheid, from participating in the 2009 parade. The organization faced equal pressure to protect freedom of expression and allow the participation of as many groups as possible, leading Pride Toronto to seek external advice.
“We turned to our legal counsel and they advised, as a not-for-profit organization, that we were unable to take a position,” said Tracey Sandilands, Executive Director of Pride Toronto. Pride Toronto issued a statement declaring neutrality and an intention to allow participation of any group which properly followed Pride’s application procedures.
“We received complaints about allowing ‘hate speech’ in the parade,” said Sandilands, “but we decided to leave it to the Toronto Police Service to interpret the law. Every year, we rely on the Toronto Police to help us deliver a successful and safe festival, and we are happy to say that their participation and helpfulness has increased over the years.”
With a significant increase in attendance and activities over recent years, Pride has worked diligently to maintain the festival’s connection with the local community, while reaching out to broader audiences. Sandilands says Pride Toronto will use public comment as part of their ongoing process of developing and revising strategies to be published in the coming months.
Pride Toronto’s alternative scene now all weekend long

Alterna-Queer, Pride Toronto’s alternative music program, goes big this year with programming at three different locations.

“I’m super excited to be part of the Alterna-Queer growth, and of having the opportunity to showcase both local artists and international talent from around the world.” says Bryen Dunn, Programming Coordinator for Pride Toronto.

The Alterna-Queer Warm-Up Party happens in Toronto’s West Queen West arts district, taking over the Great Hall for the evening of Friday July 2nd. Performances include-Vancouver based new romantic upstart, Lovers Love Haters, and Debora Cohen from The Organ’s newest project. This is also the first opportunity to catch Denmark’s Faggett Fairys for an intimate experience. These gals have ridden the pony to great success in Europe, and it’s now time for North America to get a taste. Rounding out this stellar line up is MEN, featuring the awesomely talented JD Samson (Le Tigre). And of course, the Alterna-Queer warm up wouldn’t be complete without its resident, DJ Triple-X.

On Saturday July 3rd Alterna-Queer takes over the South Stage on Church Street just north of Carlton. Local hip-hop duo Roney & Nani, performance diva Ryan G. Hinds, and electro darling Coko Galore kick off the afternoon in style. Vancouver’s Stink Mitt make a rare appearance strutting white trash rhythms, followed by Toronto’s loudest rock and roll machine Crackpuppy. Later we get our groove on with Toronto’s indie dance favourites Woodhands, followed by an encore performance by MEN. Josie Cotton and her band hit Toronto for their first ever Canadian gig, and ask us and Johnny if we’re queer. Finally, Mistress Barbara LIVE W/ Girls On A Ducati hits a Pride Toronto stage with a special performance and closing out is Fagget Fairys, the electronic queens of Europe and the people behind the hugely successful Trailer Park festival and the ArtRebels festival in Denmark.

Sunday July 4th, Alterna-Queer happens in sunny Alexander Parkette with a solid line up of Toronto’s finest. Starting the day off is sweet sensation duo Airheart, followed by the brassy, in-yer-face, politically incorrect antics of Adolf Glitter and the dark-rave sounds of The Torrent. Tomboyfriend get down with as many performers they can cram on stage while Señor Kasio rock out, and Heavy Filth keep the dirt flying loud and low. People You Know show us how youngings can rawk the party, before Diamond Rings glams up the stage in an amazing solo show followed by labelmate Private Life, featuring the one and only Katie Stelmanis.

Pride Toronto is hoping festival goers will come early and stay late. “We’ve got you covered with a triple shot of Alterna-Queer love,” says Dunn.

Background

In 2009, the Ontario Trillium Foundation awarded a grant to Pride Toronto and their collaborative partner The Icarus Foundation to green Pride over the next 3 years.

The goals of the project are to:
- reduce the environmental footprint of Pride Toronto’s festival, parade and marches
- reach and educate staff, volunteers, attendees, sponsors and partners on environmental sustainability
- promote a more sustainable economy and community

Specifically, Pride Toronto aims to be carbon neutral and zero waste by 2015.

Technical expertise for the Greening Initiative is being provided by The Icarus Foundation, a not-for-profit environmental, policy, research and education organization focused on sustaining a climate friendly tourism industry. Their mission is to be the catalyst that helps Canada become a climate friendly tourism destination.

2010 Golf Day ‘reaches out to women’

This year, Toronto’s Pride Week will include the second Women’s Golf Day as part of the annual Pride festival. The event was a first in 2009, and 2010 is likely to build on the success of the day.

“As part of our efforts to reach out to the broader queer community in Toronto, we felt that a golf day was an event that would appeal to the more mature, suburban population,” says Tracey Sandilands, Executive Director of Pride Toronto.

Scheduled for Wednesday 30th June, the Golf Day will be held at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, and will be an 18-hole scramble format. Hosted once again by popular comedian and entertainer Maggie Casella, players will tee off at 1 pm for a day filled with games, prizes and a silent auction, topped off with a three course dinner. A Mini Cooper is up for grabs for the Hole-in-One Contest.

Presenting sponsor ProudFM is helping to raise awareness of the Golf Day. “We’re thrilled to have ProudFM on board with us for this event,” says Sandilands. “Not only is this is a great addition to our festival program, an added benefit is that all profits go to funding Pride Toronto’s Dyke Program.”

This year’s Dyke Day has expanded from being the ‘Dyke Day Afternoon’ with programming that takes place after the annual Dyke March, to a full day of entertainment for the ever-increasing crowds.

But that doesn’t mean that only women are welcome, adds Sandilands. “Our Dyke March and Dyke Day events are not only for women, but have grown over the years to include people that are bisexual, transgender and intersex. By the same token, the Women’s Golf Day is for women and their friends - whoever they are.”

To register for the golf day, please visit http://www.pridetoronto.com and select Festival/Golf Day. Cost per player is $150 including golf, cart, dinner, swag bag and prizes. Dinner only costs $50.

About Pride Toronto:
Pride Toronto is the not-for-profit organization that hosts Pride Week, an annual festival held during the first weekend of July in downtown Toronto. Pride Toronto exists to celebrate the history, courage, diversity and future of Toronto’s LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities and is one of the leading cultural events of its kind in the world with a total economic benefit in 2009 of $136 million.
Toronto’s Pride Week has been named Best Festival in Canada by the Canadian Special Events Industry in 2004, 2005 and 2009, and is recognized as one of only eight Signature Events in the City of Toronto. It is ranked one of the TOP 50 festivals in Ontario by Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO) as well as one of the 18 Marquee Festivals of Distinction in Canada. With attendance of over 1,2 million, it is the third largest Pride celebration in the world and the largest in North America.
Pride Week 2010’s Trans program will be ‘transformative, transfixing and transgressive’

After several years working on developing its Trans offering, Pride Toronto’s 30th anniversary in 2010 will host a full program for the Trans community. Comprising a Trans March, a TransVerse stage and entertainment program, a Trans-specific space for the duration of the festival, and an After Party, the program has something for everyone.

“We are privileged to have been handed the torch for the Trans March by last year’s organizers,” says Tracey Sandilands, Executive Director of Pride Toronto. “We had some plans for a march in previous years, and in 2009 the community took it upon themselves to arrange a march. We got involved in order to assist, and this year have undertaken to arrange the march as part of our opportunity to serve this community.”

The Trans March will take place on the evening of Friday 2nd July, starting at Bloor and Hayden Streets at 7 pm with a pre-march rally, and then marching down Church Street at 8pm. The march is a grassroots event where Trans people and their supporters take over Church Street, demonstrating political strength in numbers and reveling in the passion and diversity of the Trans community.

The march will end at Pride Toronto’s South Stage at Church and Wood Streets, where the TransVerse stage will provide a full evening of Trans-focused speakers and entertainment for the marchers. This event is designed to build on the success of the TransAction stage created in 2008, and to bring together a transformative, transfixing and transgressive program of entertainers, writers and activists from the Trans community. The program will also feature artists from across North America, as well as local performers and activists.

The Trans After Party in partnership with FunkAsia, Pride Toronto’s South Asian program, is a first this year and features even more Trans artists and dancers - all with a Bollyqueer flavor. The After Party will take place at the Phoenix Concert Theatre the same night, starting around 10 pm.

And then there’s TransSpace, a new initiative in collaboration with Xpressions, a local Toronto social and support organization that welcomes all members of the Trans Community regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to work with a new community partner organization,” says Sandilands, “and the work that Xpressions does in the Trans community provides important opportunities for gender diverse persons to meet, socialize and go out into the larger community.”

TransSpace at Pride Week 2010 will be located in the heart of the festival site, and will provide information, outreach and support to members of the Trans community, those who are questioning or simply curious. It will be a safe, inclusive and informative area and will be open for both Saturday, July 3rd and Sunday, July 4th.

“2010 will see the Trans program at Pride really come into its own,” says Sandilands. “We have some tremendous people in the Trans community that are helping put the program together, and their hard work will make this a Trans year to be proud of.”

For more information on the Trans March, please email transmarch at pridetoronto dot com or visit the Facebook Event Page at Toronto Trans March 2010.

Expanded Dyke Day 2010 program unveiled

Pride Toronto today announced its full entertainment lineup for Dyke Day, which will take place on July 3 in Queens Park on the newest and largest stage of the ever-expanding Pride site. Pride Toronto now spans eight stages, multiple arts programs, includes more than twenty city blocks and draws more than 1,2 million visitors.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of tens of thousands of dykes rocking the Dyke March and then filling the park,” says Pride Toronto Programming Coordinator TK. “This is going to be the largest and most exciting Dyke Day ever.”

Launched in 1996, the Dyke March gathers members across the queer community in a critical mass-style political demonstration designed to increase lesbian visibility and activism. The event has grown over the years to be more inclusive, embracing bisexual, intersex and transgender people.

“Pride is the time to celebrate the full expression of who we are as the LGBTTIQQ2SA* community,” says Susan G. Cole, Senior Entertainment/Books Editor for NOW Magazine and Literary Curator for Pride Toronto, “but we need to take some time to express the L part. By celebrating Dyke Day we honour our history and keep our movement alive by giving it a voice and visibility.”

This year’s Dyke March, starts at 2 pm on Saturday, July 3, at Church and Hayden Streets, moves north on Church to Bloor, west on Bloor to Yonge and then south on Yonge to Wood Street. Groups and individuals wishing to participate are asked to register with Pride Toronto’s Dyke March Committee prior to the event.

Since 2004, the march has culminated with an afternoon of programming entitled Dyke Day Afternoon. This year’s show, hosted by Proud FM’s Deb Pearce and now running throughout the afternoon and well into the evening, includes performances by Vancouver-based musical comedienne Kate Reid, Haligonian electro experimentalists Ruby Jean & The Thoughtful Bees from Halifax, the rock/pop/punk trio 8 Inch Betsy from Chicago, New York-based vocal and violin stylist Bitch, as well as international star Cyndi Lauper. From Toronto, Saidah Baba Talibah, Hunter Valentine, The Cliks, Dragonette, DJ Betti Forde and other special guests take the stage in this wonderful new venue.

Plans for the new Queen’s Park site include a beverage garden and more Pride Streetfair exhibitors.

Later that night, CHERRY BOMB and Pride Toronto present PRIDE: A DEEPER LOVE, the official Dyke Day 2010 after party! Following last year’s jam packed event, CB returns to Revival (783 College Street, at Shaw) and invites you to go deep and feel the love at this sexy two-floor affair. Featured artists include DJ RITU (BBC Radio, UK), a pioneering specialist in Bollywood, bhangra and ‘world’ sounds, Toronto’s DJ AMITA of Besharam, Cherry Bomb’s COZMIC CAT + DENISE BENSON and more! CHERRY BOMB is a fun, flirty, dance-your-ass-off inclusive event for queer women and our friends. $12 advance / $15 at door. http://www.cherrybombtoronto.com.

AQUA PRIDE 2010 is a water-themed daytime event featuring Michael Viera, Isaac Escalante, Lena Love and Brazilian sweetheart, Ana Paula. Come, get wet and have fun!

“We’re very excited to be working with Prism again to bring Aqua Pride to the Pride Toronto site. They work year round to contribute culturally to the city and have consistently supported local talent over the years. This is a very natural progression for us both”, says Pride Toronto’s Arts & Entertainment Manager, Mary Zondanos.

“Be prepared for the biggest party of the weekend as we transform the TD Wellesely Stage into the most glamorous and wettest Aqua party yet.”, says Gairy Brown, Executive Director of Prism Toronto.

Since 2006, the Prism team has worked hard to build a solid foundation in the city, increasing attendance by 30 percent at their annual festival over the last four years. Prism takes place this year at the Kool Haus, Guvernment, Skybar, Fly Nightclub and Pride Toronto’s Wellesley Stage.

Year-round, Prism produces events in venues throughout the city: Prism College, Madonnarama, Britney Mania, Prism Divas, Eden (Labour Day), Arrival (New Year’s) and a slew of other events that keep our local talent busy (Shawn Riker, Marc Falco, Jeremy Khamkeo, Cajjmere Wray, GIA, Lena Love, Jamal, Sumation, Cesar Murillo). Prism was also behind the legendary ‘Queer As Folk Babylon tour’, producing 100 shows for over 200,000 people across North America.

Prism has carved out a reputation for producing some of the hottest late-night parties during Pride Week. Their annual Prism Festival has featured artists like Chaka Khan, Kelly Rowland, Offer Nissim, Ana Paula, Peter Rauhofer, Manny Lehman, Flava, DJ Abel, Francois Sagat, Tony Moran, Tracy Young, Deborah Cox and Sydney Blu.

Single event tickets and weekend passes are on-sale now exclusively at http://www.priape.com/prismtoronto or through Priape retail locations in Toronto and Montreal.
High profile International Grand Marshals selected for Toronto’s 2010 Pride

ride Toronto today announced the selection of two high profile queer activists as International Grand Marshals (IGMs) for its 30th anniversary. The appointment of the IGM annually is part of the organization’s efforts to highlight the incidence of queer human rights abuses that still occur on a global scale.

Gloria Careaga-Perez, a feminist, social psychologist and activist who was elected Co-Secretary General of the International Gay and Lesbian Association (ILGA) for Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean in November 2008 at the 30th ILGA Conference in Vienna; and Renato Sabbadini, ILGA Co-Secretary for Italy and Europe.

ILGA is a network of more than 600 groups from 111 countries fighting for equal human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersexual and transgendered people.

Careaga-Perez, who is also a co-coordinator of the long-standing lesbian group El Closet de Sor Juana in Mexico, has been a psychology professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico since 1979. A co-founder of the university’s gender studies program, Careaga-Perez introduced a sexual diversity studies area in 1998. She has coordinated six anthologies and authored numerous articles, and has served as an advisor to national and international agencies.

Sabbadini, who is Bergamo, Italy’s first openly gay city councillor, has been a part of the LBGT movement since 1992. He has worked as treasurer and foreign affairs officer of Arcigay, Italy’s foremost gay rights organization, and as spokesperson for the WorldPride Rome 2000 Coordination Committee. A linguist, he speaks Italian, English, German, Spanish, French and Russian, and lives in Brussels.

Tracey Sandilands, Executive Director of Pride Toronto, says this is the fifth year that Pride Toronto will support the efforts of LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities around the world with its ‘Global Human Rights for Queers: What is OUT About’ campaign. The purpose of the ongoing campaign is to help raise awareness about queer rights abuses, which range from anti-sodomy laws to the death penalty.
“We chose the ILGA secretaries because they represent the global community,” says Sandilands. “We want to highlight this year how many countries in the world still perpetrate human rights abuses against queer people.”

n 2009, Pride Toronto focused on Uganda and the African region. Last year’s IGM was Victor Juliet Mukasa, a trans man from Uganda, where an anti-homosexuality bill, if passed, would impose the death sentence on anyone repeatedly convicted of having gay sex.

In December 2008, Careaga-Perez and Sabbadini, on behalf of the ILGA, protested UN Assembly President Ali Abdussalam Treki’s failure to consider the protection of LBGT people a human rights issue. They appealed to representatives of the 66 United Nations member states that had signed a statement supporting the decriminalization of homosexuality to demand an explanation for Treki’s position on the issue.
The 2010 IGMs will, in addition to leading the parade, present the human rights award at the 6th annual Pride Gala and Awards ceremony, serve as guest speakers at the gala and other events, and officiate at human rights events during the festival.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the process for electing the 2010 Grand Marshal, Honoured Dyke and Honoured Groups.
