Panel Discussion: “From Holy Land to Gay Mecca in 40 Years
Shai Doitsh and Itay Harlap, senior figures of the LGBT community in Israel, will present a 40-year journey of pride in Israel. It will begin in 1975 when The Aguda was established and when being gay was illegal, and conclude in the present. Shai and Itay will talk about their struggle and acceptance within Israeli society, the struggle of those who are queer and Orthodox, and the life of queer Israeli Arabs. They will discuss the Israeli queer community’s struggle for marriage rights and the gap between the legal status in their daily life and challenges with homophobia. Finally, they will talk about the City of Toronto’s contribution to Israel’s queer community.
