Friday, June 22 2007- Church Street & Wood Street Xtra! and Pride Toronto presented, "Pride and Resistance", a series of five video shorts on Queer history created by video documentary director, Nancy Nicol. From the birth of gay liberation to the present, "Pride and Resistance" took a whirlwind tour through forty years of local and national LGBTQ history. Including appearances from: Charlie Hill, Ken Popert, Chris Bearchell. Gerald Hannon, John Sewell. Reverend Dr. Brent Hawkes. Bob Gallagher, Douglas Stewart. Jim Egan and Jack Nesbit, Dr. Alan Li, Faith Nolan and many more. Part 1, 1971-1977: The Birth of Gay Liberation; the first Toronto Pride, TBP, Politics and Joy. Part 2, 1977-1981: Fighting the Backlash, Resisting Anita Bryant and Police Raids; Queen's Park denies Human Rights protection. Part 3, 1981-1986: LGBT Communities of Colour Organizing; Human Rights in Ontario victory. Part 4, 1994-1999: Ontario Denies Relationship Recognition; Jim Egan and Jack Nesbit; AIDS Organizing and Remembrance. Part 5, 2000-2006: The Dyke March; International Grand Marshal - We March For Those Who Can't and Imaging Our Future. Nancy Nicol Nancy Nicol created five video shorts on queer history for the 2007 Pride celebrations entitled Pride and Resistance. She has been documenting LGBT organizing in Canada for over a decade. Her works include: Proud Lives: Chris Bearchell (2007, honourable mention Best Canada Female short, Inside Out), The End of Second Class, (2006, Elle Flanders Award for Best Documentary, Inside Out); Politics of the Heart / La politique du coeur (2006, Audience Award for Best Documentary, Image+Nation, Montreal, 2006 and Elle Flanders Best Documentary, 2nd prize, Inside Out 2007); and Stand Together, (2002, Audience Choice Award, Making Scenes, Ottawa, 2002). She is currently working on a new documentary in this series of works, entitled, "The Queer Nineties." Nancy Nicol is a Professor of Visual Arts at York University. She has exhibited widely in national and international festivals, conferences and community-based organizations. |
