Title: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Pride Toronto is the registered not-for-profit organization that produces Toronto's Pride Week, a ten day long celebration of the diverse sexual and gender identities, histories, cultures, families and lives of Toronto's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning and 2 Spirited (LGBTTIQQ2S) communities.
Summary
The Executive Director:
- Provides strategic and operational leadership to Pride Toronto in executing its Mission, Vision and Values.
- To administer the general operations of the organization under the direction of the Board of Directors remaining consistent with the approved goals, objectives and policies of the Board.
- Reports to, and works with, the Board of Directors in directing Pride Toronto’s affairs
Duties
Financial Management
Oversees the financial management of the organization working closely with the Treasurer of the
Board, and the Finance Committee. Provides strategic vision for the annual budgeting process, and ensures Pride Toronto maintains strong, positive relationships with funders.
The Executive Director oversees all aspects of administration and finances, and ensures/designates appropriate staff support.
Budgets
- Develop overall budget for Pride Toronto infrastructure and operational activities;
- Ensure Pride Toronto budget is managed according to sound financial practices;
Financial Management
- Liaise with Pride Toronto financial/accounting officer regarding financial administration/reporting;
- Monitor income and expenditures;
- Ensure that financial statements are prepared for the approval of the Board of Directors on a monthly basis;
- Report on the financial affairs of Pride Toronto to the Board of Directors as required;
- Approve all expenditures and negotiate contracts and agreements;
Auditing
1. Ensure that audited statements are prepared annually
Human Resources
The Executive Director is ultimately responsible for all staff and volunteers although these duties are operationally delegated to the Associate Director (staff) and the Volunteer Program Manager (volunteers).
- Oversee the hiring process for all staff, delegating as necessary;
- Manage direct reports (the Senior Management Team), including orientation, ongoing supervision and performance reviews;
- Ensure the work of staff and volunteer teams is coordinated;
- On behalf of the Board of Directors, act as chief negotiator for all staff/volunteer grievances.
Strategic and Operational Planning and Management
The Executive Director works in conjunction with the Board of Directors to develop, direct and evaluate strategic and long range plans. The ED also leads the development of work plans, translating strategic and long range plans into actions. Additionally, the ED provides leadership to the Senior Management Team in addressing operational planning for Pride Toronto.
- Act as Chief Executive Officer to carry out all directions and recommendations made by the Board of Directors;
- Ensure that Pride Toronto business and affairs are implemented and conducted in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the Association, the Mission Statement and policies, procedures and programs established by the Board of Directors;
- Act as a member ex-officio of the Board of Directors and is a member ex-officio of all Pride Toronto committees with authority to delegate a substitute, if required;
- Report to the Board of Directors all activities and concerns regarding the operation of Pride Toronto on a monthly (or “as needed”) basis;
- Prepare resource material and information for the Board and its committees to assist in their activities and decision making;
- Work with the Board of Directors to develop directions and priorities for Pride Toronto.
Revenue Generation
Sponsorship
The Executive Director is responsible for maintaining existing relationships with Pride Toronto’s sponsors, balancing the requests of sponsors with Pride Toronto’s Mission, and the benefits to the organization / event.
- Develop corporate sponsorship packages annually;
- Negotiate sponsorship contracts in order to advance Pride Toronto’s financial and operational goals;
- Follow up with sponsors on accounts receivables; post-event reports and visibility assessments as detailed in sponsorship contracts;
- Seek out and secure new and returning sponsorships.
Fundraising
The Executive Director has general oversight of all fundraising activities and grant applications.
- Seeks out new funding opportunities;
- Works closely with the Associate Director to secure new and maintain existing grant revenues;
- Works in close association with the Board to develop and maintain fundraising activities;
Other revenues
- Works with the Treasurer of the Board to ensure that procedures are in place to manage revenues earned over the festival weekend
- Works to ensure that Pride Toronto maintains a diverse revenue portfolio.
Communications
The Executive Director is the primary contact person for Pride Toronto members, funders, committees, partners, and other interested parties. In addition, the ED communicates Pride Toronto’s broad strategic directions, vision and goals to external stakeholders.
- Is the primary spokesperson for the organization (i.e. is the face of the organization)
- Manage Pride Toronto’s public relations contracts;
- In collaboration with Pride Toronto’s Volunteer Media Team, respond to inquiries about Pride Toronto from the media.
Community and Cultural Relations
- Develops new and manages existing community and cultural partnerships.
- Facilitate community participation and stakeholder inclusion in Pride Toronto’s activities, where appropriate;
- Ensure that positive working relations are developed and maintained with community and cultural agencies, individuals and government.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years experience in a senior management role.
- Significant financial management experience, including experience managing budgets of $1 million plus.
- Exceptional people management skills.
- Experience working in an environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a large and diverse team.
- A festival or non-profit background is an asset.
